Hearing Center – Important Resources to Help with Screening and Treatments

Hearing Center

The Importance of Hearing Center

A hearing center is a place where patients can go to receive assistance with many types of hearing problems. It is normally staffed with doctoral level professionals who are specially trained to identify and treat many kinds of hearing problems.

But a hearing center also offers much more than that. They can provide you with a great deal of information to help you to better understand hearing loss and the kinds of treatments most suitable for them. In addition they are a great resource for one on one counseling and support.

Many people have a difficult time dealing with hearing loss and these centers have trained professionals who understand these problems. They offer encouragement and support to help those to seek the proper treatment and ultimately improve the quality of their lives.

A hearing center typically has advanced diagnostic tools to help to identify different types of hearing problems. Depending on the type of hearing loss or problem, they can usually suggest and implement an effective plan of treatment.

The most common type of treatment entails hearing aids. These miniature devices help to amplify certain kinds of sounds so that the patient can better understand conversations, warning sounds, or other kinds of sounds we normally experience on a day to day basis.

Hearing aids are optimized for each patient and adjustments are made depending upon the degree of hearing loss and the patient’s lifestyle. They may recommend certain types based on a patients’ needs and preferences.

Hearing Devices – Common Types Used

Hearing Devices

Common Hearing Devices

Hearing devices are products which help us to experience the world around us with better sound clarify. There are several types of hearing devices but we’ll talk about the most common.

Hearing aids are the most common types of hearing devices. These are typically small devices which fit in the ears. They detect sound and then amplify and transmit it depending on how the device is adjusted and according to needs of the patient.

Hearing aids are typically battery driven and incorporate some type of microphone, amplifier and digital circuitry. The manufacturers of these devices have spent a great deal of time, money and resources developing them to be state of the art.

They are providing millions of people worldwide with the ability to discern sounds they haven’t been able to do for some time. They have helped many people to participate again in group surroundings.
Previously they would avoid group situations because their hearing loss made it difficult to understand what people were saying. These advanced hearing aids provide an alternative for these people to enable them to hear sounds and conversations with improved clarity.

Hearing aids come in different sizes, styles, and colors. Some are designed to fit within the outer ear. And others can fit in the ear channel. There are even new designs which are so small that they can be inserted completely within the ear channel and are virtually undetectable. Not all designs are appropriate for all patients, making the advice of your Audiologist so important.

Whichever style of hearing device is recommended, you can expect a significant improvement in the sensitivity and quality of your hearing.

Hearing Aid Repair Basics

hearing aid repairHearing Aid Repair Basics

The reality of having a hearing aid is that they need a lot of repair and maintenance. Keeping your hearing aid working properly is extremely important and bringing it in for repairs is crucial. Below you can find hearing aid repair basics to help you better understand the repair process.

First, why do you need to perform repairs on your hearing aids? The simple answer is earwax and moisture. Over 75% of all repairs done to hearing aids are for these two reasons. You need to clean and take care of your hearing aids to ensure you do not get earwax buildup, especially on smaller models. Also, ensure water does not come in contact with the aids as there are sensitive electronic parts that can be damaged.

Besides from earwax and moisture, most hearing aids need to be repaired because their electronics break after an extended period of time. Receivers need replaces, wiring needs to be redone, etc. So, let’s now talk about the repairs. Smaller hearing aids, such as CIC (completely-in-the-canal) hearing aids, need more repairs than larger hearing aids.

These smaller hearing aids require more regular maintenance than any other type of aid and are especially sensitive to earwax buildup. Most in-the-ear hearing aids need to be repaired anywhere from 12 to 15 months, in-the-canal hearing aids need repaired every 9 to 12 months, and CIC hearing aids needing repaired every 7 to 9 months.

So, you now know why you need to repair them and how often to repair them, but where do you go to repair them? The best place to bring your hearing aid for repair is to an audiologist. They are experts with hearing aids and will be able to properly repair them.

Also, sending them in to your supplier is another option. How much will it cost you to have your hearing aid repaired though? It will vary depending on the model you are having repaired and where you go. You can expect to pay more on older hearing aids though as their parts are harder to find. Also, sending it to the supplier will cost more than taking it to an audiologist.

You can generally expect to pay at least $100 for circuit changes, with that being the bare minimum. When you purchase your hearing aid you need to make sure you are given a good warrantee. Warrantees will vary by manufacturer, but you should be able to get one that will cover repairs for an extended period of time.

Never buy unless you receive at least a one-year full coverage warranty. Hearing aids provide people with the ability to hear when they often are not able to, so keeping those hearing aids working is incredible important. You should now know the hearing aid repair basics.
